There is often a certain dollar amount that is reimbursed per year.  Please check your personal plan to determine your level of coverage.  I do not direct-bill for insurance companies, but I do provide a receipt after every session that can be submitted to your insurance company.

  • I treat adults over the age of 18 years old.

  • No, you do not need a referral to make an appointment with me. I do accept referrals from family doctors and other health professionals if that is preferred.

  • CBT is an evidence-based therapy that explores the relationship between your thoughts, behaviours, and emotions. The focus is identifying and modifying thoughts and behaviours that may be contributing to feeling stuck. It involves teaching new skills and practicing these skills between sessions.

  • A first session is 90 minutes long. During this session we will start by reviewing the consent form and I can answer any questions you have about participating in therapy. The remainder of the session will be spent discussing the issue(s) that brought you into therapy, and collecting a background history to help put the problem into context. At the end of the session, we will discuss your goals for therapy. Following the first session, we will discuss a treatment plan to outline how therapy can help you meet your goals.

  • Research has shown that consistent and regular therapy is effective. When starting therapy, I recommend meeting on a weekly or biweekly basis so we can build a therapeutic relationship, learn about the problem, and start to work on coping skills. After a period of time, we can spread out the sessions so you have time to practice skills and strategies.

  • This depends on the issue(s) that you would like help with, your goals for therapy, and your financial considerations. Some people prefer to meet for a limited amount of time to work on a specific goal and some people like to have ongoing support with multiple goals. Typically, therapy lasts between 8-20 sessions, but many people like to continue receiving therapy after this timeframe.

  • Psychologists and psychiatrists are both registered healthcare professionals. Psychologists often have a Ph.D. in clinical psychology and have completed a residency and additional year of supervised practice. Psychiatrists are medical doctors with an additional specialization in psychiatry. Psychiatrists are licensed to prescribe medication and are covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) in Ontario.

Psychologists can provide both psychotherapy and diagnostic assessment. They cannot prescribe medications. Often, psychologists and psychiatrists work collaboratively to ensure that clients are receiving the best care through medication management (if needed) and psychotherapy.
